I thought the opera was a good excuse to combine the historical stuff with the artistic, as well as a winter/holiday theme. Aziraphale and Crowley are about to have a lovely night out in a beautiful environment, and they're probably going to a restaurant or a coffee shop afterwards.
You might, if you were to come across a music video named 'Crucified' on youtube, notice a striking resemblance of certain costumes and colours...
