The musical John is John the Balladeer or Silver John, by Manly Wade Wellman. The stories are set in the Appalachian mountains, mostly the North Carolina section, and the author was a recognized expert on the region's folklore. And I've been up on those mountains a lot. Every so often, things happen. Deer running faster than they are supposed to be able to, not caring that they're so close to a car that you could open a window and touch them, easily. Voices coming from a place you know there isn't anybody. The wildlife being unexpectedly, unusually quiet...
It's a nice area, really. Very scenic, pretty safe...and actually a rainforest.
Also, you can get a collection of the short stories for free online--Baen Books offered it on one of the free CDs and the images are around. Getting the novels is significantly harder.
