This was an absolutely awesome story. It was simultaneously sad and sweet and you had the characters down pat. And speaking of characters, I think you captured one of the most important characters in the story really well: Italy. I've never been to Venice, but I have been to the country, and you caught its essence really well. Carnivale has the aura of beauty, mystery and deception, which worked so well with the story. I don't know if it was intended or not, but the whole issue with the masks (I know...standard for Carnivale) fit into the theme of the "masks" that Aziraphale and Crowley always wear around each other: angel and demon, and even as they attempt to get close together, they don't take them off. And the last line left me breathless. Good job!
